AbstractIn various categories of urban consolidation, fear of crime has a huge impact on any society. Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and here crimes are increasing. This research attempted to explore the ‘crime analysis in Chittagong City concerning socio - economic and spatial factors’. The main objectives of this research were to study the trend, types and pattern of crimes; to make spatial analysis and identify crime pron e police stations with socio - economic and spatial distribution; to discover the socio - economic and spatial factors of crime occurrence; to examine the citizens’ perceptions and behaviour concerning crimes in the city; and to provide a local level crime pre vention mechanism. In collecting primary sources of data, the methods applied in conducting this research were field observation; questionnaire survey; key informants’ interview; focus group discussions, case studies and secondary sources of data were coll ected from police stations’ first information records and other national, international and local level reports and publications, etc. All information and data were processed, analyzed and interpreted through quantitative, qualitative and spatial analysis techniques. Profile analysis of respondents indicate that populations’ sex ratio gap and household size simultaneously are decreasing and household level literacy rate is more than ninety one percent which is a good sign of enlightened future generation w here national level rate is only 59.8 percent. Besides, household income gap between the high and low income group is huge and dependent population was about two per working member. Illegal drugs dealing, theft and women and child oppression offenses of se rious nature were always recorded during 2001 - 2013 in Chittagong Metropolitan areas’ in all police stations’ and all other types of crimes were also indicating increasing tendency gradually which was disclosed from the CMP documents. Perception on crime of fenders’ age showed 13 to 30 years’ aged and poor people whose monthly household income ≤1000 BD Tk. are more prone to commit crime and middle class people whose monthly household income 20,000 - 30,000 BD Tk. are less prone to commit crime. Causes of linking to commit crimes are poverty, unemployment and frustration, availability of drugs, lack of awareness and illiteracy, lack of parental care, political shelter and local influence, degradation of socio - cultural environment, abuse of information technology and influenc e of western culture, lack of law enforcing agencies’ action and living in slum. Effects of crime in residential and non - residential areas are multi - dimensional and as a whole, it is increasing insecurity, sufferings of people, losing money and assets, spo iling teenagers’ lives, environmental degradation, etc. More than two - third citizens’ believed that there are locational advantages to commit crime in their residential and non - residential areas in Chittagong City which make them vulnerable to become more crime victims. Most crime prone areas in Chittagong City are New Market junction, Pahartoli railway station, Battali railway station, Agrabad junction, Baijid Majar, Akbar shah slum, Kadamtali slum and Bus Terminal, etc. The majority of the crime victim s’ behaviour during a crime incidence was ‘silently gives all on demand’ and onlookers’ behaviour during a crime event was ‘no reaction’ . Lack of proper administrative monitoring and corruption are the most vital causes of ineffectiveness of current crime controlling mechanism in CMP. Eliminating political pressure and interruption, legal freedom of work for the law enforcement personnel and ensuring competent and neutral law enforcement personnel are the key aspects to make effective and improved systems o f law enforcement
