Abstract | Lao PDR has one of the most pristine forest ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Over the last decade forest cover has rapidly declined from 64% in the mid-sixties to 41.5% today. This study attempts to develop a monitoring method for modeling and mapping of suitable afforestation sites. Geoinformation technology has been employed to find an alternative solution of conventional forest cover monitoring assessment procedure. Remote sensing data was found helpful to generate forest canopy density (FCD) and land-cover for afforestation and for better understanding of present Land use and land cover (LUILC). Analytical Hierarchy Processing and Multi-criteria evaluation in GIS have been employed to discover correctness of land order analysis. Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ (1992, 2001 and 2007) were used for LUILC classification using supervised classification. An overall accuracy of 86.79% in 1992, 83.23% in 2001nd 77.32% in 2007 were obtained. Forest types almost deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest, un-stock forest were found to cover more than 68.58%, rice paddy is 17.22, bare land and water resource are 8.81 and 5.39%. Then SPOT imagery of 2007 was used to find out the forest density map. NDVI, SR and Entropy were tried to compute tree volume per hectare. It has been found that polynomial regression model shows the high fit between vegetation indices and volume of trees. However, NDVI and SR offered satisfactory results with r² = 0.810 and r² = 0.856. |
