AbstractDhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Due to its increasing urban population, significant expansion of the city has taken place through development of residential and commercial areas mostly by private land developers. This process of urban expansion is causing rapid conversion of land cover type into build up areas. Specially, the conversion of low lying areas and natural drainage channels into build up areas has reduced the amount of natural drainage channels remarkably. Such conversion of land has hindered the natural draining pattern and thus has increased problems like flood and water logging during rainy season. This study attempts to examine the trend of reduction of natural drainage channels in Dhaka City and the effect of urbanization on reduction of natural drainage system. The study also attempts to find effect of reduction of natural drainage channels on storm runoff characteristics of Dhaka city.
