AbstractWiang Kum Kam is a famous archaeological place in Chiangmai, Thailand. The Special characteristic of Wiang Kum Kam is that it is a buried ancient city by flood. In history of Wiang Kum Kam, it also mentions changing direction of Ping River; archaeologist found evidences from historical documents that confirmed old location of Ping River located at eastern of Wiang Kum Kam. Changing of Ping River and flood situation are interesting phenomena. It impacts on historical people lifestyle and influences human habitation in the present time. Most of the studies of Wiang Kum Kam history, archaeologists mainly used historical data and archaeological data as main evidences but less using of geoinformatics Integration of geoinformatics and archaeology are used for explaining Ping River changed and flood situation in Wiang Kum Kam. Aerial photo in 2475 B.E. was used as the base image for visual interpretation. Geological knowledge is used for explaining shape of the river. Facing direction of ancient temples is support data which specifies the previous location of the river. Archaeologists believed that the flood make the location of the river change but if considering topographic and DEM surrounding of Wiang Kum Kam, there is a possibility that the present Ping River may arise before others. Flood direction is an important factor which is considered to be studied. Due to many temples was buried under sediment, soil depth is main data that can be applied into GIS technique to analyze sediment. Deep zone of sediment was created in raster format and it can be used for flood situation explanation. The result of this study is that in that time, there were three main river lines surrounding Wiang Kum Kam including the present Ping River. Big flood might occur in around 2200 B.E. Main of water came from the present Ping River through northwest side of Wiang Kum Kam and then water attacked a west wall after that it bounced back to group of temples at the west side of Wiang Kum Kam. So, those temples were buried in high depth. After the flood, people were not confident that it would be safe to live in Wiang Kum Kam because they faced the major calamity, many people died and they lost their properties. Therefore, people evacuated to better places and Wiang Kum Kam became abandoned city. The result of this study is the possibilities of phenomena that can occur in historical period. All of assumptions are originated from archaeological evidences and geographic data. The main target is that this thesis can be a base data for study of Wiang Kum Kam in the future.
