AbstractDisaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; for example it includes floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic processes. Few disasters need preparedness, floods needs preparedness in order to prevent the loss to some extent. During the previous few decades India encountered numerous floods which left the areas with huge loss in many sectors. The livelihood, property and infrastructure are effected due to the urban flooding. Floods in major cities are disastrous not only to the environment but also have serious implications on human life and property. The main aim of this study was to employ the Geoinformatics like GIS and RS techniques to generate the land use/land cover change, to generate statistical data on land consumption by urban area and reduction of agriculture area, water and bare land and vulnerability maps for the study area. This study is mainly focus on the urban floods. In recent years Kurnool is one such city where heavy loss occurred due to the floods. Though, there are many analyses done by the government agencies there is a need of more such analysis to know more about the flood risk zones and the factors that are causing the hazards. GIS allows us to apply huge number of tools that are helpful to analyse the areas with a best graphical interface. The floods risk areas can be known by going through series of steps in the software. Flooding risk consists of hazard and vulnerability. Hazards can be defined as threatening events, or the probability of occurrence of a potentially damaging phenomena within a given time period and area. After creating two maps namely vulnerability and hazard maps, these two maps are combined to create risk map
