AbstractStudy of barge impact with bridge piers has been addressed in recent future by many researchers. As the existing bridge design standards for barge-bridge impact analysis show deviation with research investigations, more studies on this area is a present requirement. This study shows a finite element analysis carried out related with barge-bridge impact analysis to study on this impact behaviour. Static impact analysis has been carried out on barge and rigid pier impact with the varying pier size and pier shape. Then impact force- bow deformation was observed. Frequency analysis was carried on barge structure with free boundary condition to check whether it is possible to model barge impact in quasi-static condition. Later obtained impact force-bow deformation relationship results were compared with the simplified method proposed by AASHTO guideline, which is commonly using barge-bridge impact analysis standard. It was found the simplicity used in AASHTO method, has not considered some important factors on impact force such as pier size and pier width. Also this study investigated on a simplified approach to model dynamic impact analysis by introducing simplified spring-mass model to replace complex barge geometry, to reduce computational cost and such simplified model might be used for barge impact analysis in the future.
