AbstractPiles are such important structures because the entire superstructure depends on the performance of the piles. Intense care and accuracy are required to ensure the safe design of piles. The safe and economical design of piles is based on reliability and accurate seismic analysis of piles. Researchers show a great deal of interest in the lateral and vertical seismic response of pile foundations for many decades. Quite a great number of methods have been developed with enough accuracy, efficiency and sophistication. Very few studies have been done on the responses of pile due to underlying soil layer below the pile. The studies are basically based on geological investigations. But here in this research a parametric study has been conducted to observe the response of piles due to varying profile of bedrock. This study is focused on developing a better understanding of the behavior of piles subjected to lateral loadings due to underlying soil layer underneath piles and diversity in properties of soil layer. In this research a 2D-3DOF ring continuum model has been selected. Soil natural frequency of homogeneous soil is evaluated and compared with the closed-form solution. Responses are analyzed and evaluated by including underlying soil beneath pile bottom tip. This analysis has been carried out for both soft and stiff soil condition. Pile response corresponding to variation of stiffness of underling soil layer is also conducted. Contribution of pile length variation to the response of pile-soil system is also conducted.
