AbstractChannel estimation is an important issue in the design of any mobile systems in order to accurately estimate the channel coefficients and use it to recover the transmitted signal. This thesis studies the optimal reference symbol design for Least Square (LS) channel estimation in 4G (Fourth Generation) Mobile System with Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, considering the case of Long Term Evolution (LTE) Downlink. It is shown that the optimal reference symbol can help the Least Square channel estimator to achieve the minimum Mean Square Error (MSE) without the need of matrix inversion, which results in better performance and reduced complexity. Moreover, we also proposed the channel estimation approach for LTE which can be done in three steps. First, the Least Square Channel estimation using optimal reference symbol is implemented to get the channel coefficients for pilot tones. Then the Interpolation in Frequency domain is done to get the channel estimation for all subcarriers of OFDM symbols with pilot tones. Last, the Interpolation in Time domain is done to get the channel estimation for the whole LTE subframe. In this thesis, we have developed a simulation model that combines LTE Downlink's link level parameters, MIMO, OFDM and channel estimation techniques. Both the analysis and the simulation results show that the proposed approach can achieves a minimum Mean Square Error of channel estimation with a reduced complexity and a good performance in BER. In conclusion, it can be a suitable channel estimation approach for Long Term Evolution Downlink with MIMO OFDM.
