AbstractIn broadband satellite communications, several kinds ofTCP implementations such as TCP Peach, TCP Reno, TCP SACK, etc are used to control congestion on the links to achieve better bandwidth utilization. Recently, a new technique of TCP performance named TCP Hybla was introduced and showed its priority in comparison to standard TCP algorithms. Due to its improvement in bandwidth utilization in comparison to standard TCP implementations, TCP Hybla is considered as a congestion control algorithm for satellite communications in future. This thesis aims to evaluate the improvements of TCP Hybla in comparison to TCP Reno through four main simulations which are divided into fourteen cases study. Simulation results show that congestion window on the links which use TCP Hybla can achieve threshold value of Slow Start mode in a short time to change into Congestion Avoidance mode. On the other hand, links which use TCP Reno need much time to reach threshold value due to congestion window increases in a low rate. Beside that, TCP Hybla can get better performance on asymmetric links than on symmetric link. This situation occurs due to round trip delay time on asymmetric link is longer than on the symmetric link. Similarly, throughput, goodput of TCP Hybla are also better than TCP Reno when they are compared on the same trjlnsmission path. Although TCP Hybla achieves better congestion window on asymmetric link, throughput and fairness index of this TCP implementation is nearly same with value on symmetric link. However, in comparison to TCP Reno, this result is a great improvement in bandwidth utilization. With its all improvements, TCP Hybla is considered as an ideal substitution for standard TCP such as TCP Reno, TCP SACK, TCP Westwood, etc. TCP Hybla also has a few limitations such as the threshold value at Slow Start can not be set at high value and the improvement in bandwidth utilization on asymmetric link in comparison link is still light. However, TCP Hybla has been foreseen to be a suitable TCP performance for long distance communication such GEO and HEO satellite links.
