AbstractUniversal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) has two models of operation, namely UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access-TDD Mode (UTRA-TDD) and UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access-FDD Mode (UTRA-FDD). UTRA-TDD uses Time Division-Code Division Multiple Access (TD-CDMA) technology. The Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) component allows the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) capacity to be assigned dynamically. Since the majority of the traffic is expected to come from multimedia sources, the traffic is expected to be downlink-biased. If the allocation of capacity is done intelligently, UTRA-TDD is expected to offer higher spectrum efficiency than UTRA-FDD. This thesis proposes a channel allocation scheme that is the combination of channel locked Scheme and region division scheme. This combination allows not only higher efficiency of resource utilization but lower signal interference. Through Matlab simulation, the proposed channel allocation scheme is demonstrated to be better than the two original schemes in blocking probability.
