AbstractOptical access networks have been considered by both academia and industry. Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) have been a promising solution in order to reduce the bottleneck problem between backbone networks and local area networks, since they can provide much higher bandwidth in access networks compared to traditional copper-based networks. Furthermore, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology has been proposed to extend the capacity of the traditional EPONs without drastically changing the fiber infrastructure. There are various algorithms for dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) in WDM EPONs to provide fair and efficient bandwidth utilization. To study the impact of WDM, we perform simulation experiments for evaluating and comparing the performances between a single-channel EPON and a multiple-channel EPON, i.e., a WDM EPON. Moreover, the simulation is performed to study the effects of various DBA algorithms with different service types, i.e., WDM IPACT and WDM JIT online scheduling with gated and limited services. Finally, when applicable, we compare the results from simulation experiments to the theoretical results to validate the simulation.
