AbstractThe a bsorption probability has been introduced as a more appropriate performance measure for dimensioning optical network s compared to the traditional bl ocking probability. This thesis investigates the network dimensioning problem considering the absorption probability with fixed alternate routing. We first introduce a computational method for calculating the absorption probability with fixed alternate rou ting. The proposed method is based on the reliability analysis and provides an approximation to the absorption probability . We then develop a simulation program and evaluate the accuracy of the proposed approximation. Th e results show that, with fixed al ternate routing , the absorption probability of the network is reduced compared to fixed routing. In addition, t he results show that , for a given network capacity, the first passage time (time for network capacity upgrade) of the network is increased when f ixed alternate routing is implemented. F inally , the proposed computational method is used for link capacity allocation . The r esults show that the amount of link capacity is reduced as the number of the alternate paths for each source - destination pair increases . Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that fixed alternate routing improves the network dimensioning process with the absorption probability compared to the previously used fixed routing.
