AbstractNetwork coding is a prominent technique which allows data combining at some inter- mediate nodes. An OFDM based cellular relay network is one of digital communication networks that gives opportunities to employ network coding at relay stations to improve the throughput of the system. This thesis proposes a method to allocate the resources (i.e. relay stations, sub- carrier, transmission power) to maximize the system throughput over a limited number of subcarriers, timeslots and amount of transmission power. The resource allocation are divided into two steps. Relay selection is done by using a heuristic algorithm in the first step. The second step uses optimization to jointly allocate the subcarriers, timeslots and transmission power to all stations in a cell. The simulation experiments are conducted to present the impacts on the system throughput of several system parameters, e.g. number of subcarriers, number of times- lots, traffic demands and number of mobile stations. The performances of three cell types (a cell without relay stations, a cell with relay station but without network cod- ing, and a cell with network coding employed in relay stations) are compared. It is observed that a cell with network coding employed in relay stations outperforms the other cell types consistenly under a wide range of network scenarios.
