AbstractThis paper reveals the involvement and impacts of r oad crashes on the poor people in Yangon, Myanmar. The study aims to investigate whet her poor people are more likely involved in road crashes and to identify whether co nsequence of higher impacts on poor household are rather than non-poor household. Speci fically, it is intent to understand the current situation of road crashes, and differences between impact of road crashes on poor and non-poor household. The findings can assist pol icy makers in determining the appropriate policies to mitigate the impacts and im prove poverty alleviation actions. The research was based on the questionnaire survey desi gn in Yangon. To identify the involvement of road crashes, and impacts on the hou sehold of poor and non-poor people, hypothesis tests were applied. The linear regressio n model was applied to evaluate the contributing factors on the declining situation of household income after traffic accident involvement. The research applies the logistic regr ession model to determine which factors significantly affect the living standard an d pawing assets on the poor after traffic accident. The result indicates that in Yangon, poo r people are more likely to involve in the road crashes with almost twice than non-poor pe ople. Most of involvement is labours/sellers with main male reproductive age. Po or people are more likely to have severe injuries when comparing to non-poor people. The situation after road crashes causes more poverty to the group of poor people. Th e reduction of household income, food consumption and living standard, and borrowing money and pawing assets factors seems to be more severe than non-poor people. The results shows that most involvement of road crashes in Yangon are lower social economic groups. The costs and impacts due to road crashes are in a higher burden for poor people . The findings could recommend policies to improve knowledge and road safety conce rns to this specific group. Other than that, transportation planning such as the improveme nt of public transport and basic road infrastructure could reduce the road accident probl em for poor people who are the main group of road users in Yangon.
