Abstract | The street pattern can directly effects on efficiency, travel behavior, connectivity and continuity of a road network. In Unites States most of neighborhoods and citywide networks are laid in grid pattern. Although the myth is that, it is a practice to avoid in reality it is inefficient, dangerous and a key cause of traffic congestion. This makes a need to re-evaluate hexagonal city planning which has been ignored in early 1900’s as a replacement of gird pattern. This study performs a comparison of performance of robust grid pattern and Chet network (hexagonal) in the subject of traffic engineering using a micro simulator; Transmodeler. The main performance indicators for this study are average speed, delay, VKT, VHT, trip length and stopped time of networks. The results demonstrate increases in all performance indicators, and encourage the use of hexagonal design (Chet network) as a valid alternative to robust grid network. The methodology and discussion explains the network design, methods used, and the significance of results on the development procedure. |
