Abstract | Bus accidents are common in Thailand. The severity of bus accidents is different from case to case. The current study focuses on identifying the factors that affect the severity of bus accidents. The cases of bus accidents were collected by Department of Land Transport and investigated the additional data from the news. In previous studies, there are lots of interesting factors contribute the severity of bus accidents. The effect on severity index is analyzed by multiple regression model. However, the current study included the additional interesting factors which are variables to the model, i.e. distance form origin, driving time from origin, brake failure, driver safe and roof damaged. The current study reveals five factors that could lead to severe bus accidents and casualties: two story bus, brake failure, departure at night, shoulder lateral clearance on the left less than 1m and roof damaged. These five factors were positively significant to the model; whereas, driver safe showed a negative significance to the model. The findings showed that incase of two story bus, brake failure, departure at night, shoulder lateral clearance on the left less than 1m and roof damaged are more likely to cause severe accidents than the cases under normal conditions such as; single deck bus, nice brake system, departure at day time, shoulder width more than 1 meter and roof are not damaged. |
