AbstractThe acceleration of urban expansion due to economic development causes the decrease of land use on agricultural purpose, which affects to farming system and changes residential livelihood. Since Chiang Mai Province is a nature of agricultural - based, which is an important sector in economy, the major objective of this study is to identify the best scenario for farmers through economic assessment on agricultural land use change and propose strategies in order to achieve sustainable agricultural management and improve farmer’ quality of life in the context of urbanization. The study focuses on the changes in agricultural land - use in the period of ten y ears. A mixed - method approach is conducted throughout the research, which includes household survey questionnaire and key informant interviews. Cost and benefit analysis is applied in this study. The results of this study show that among four analyzed scenarios, the value of economic benefit return vary. There are two scenarios are selected as the best choices for farmers because of receiving the greater criteria value than baseline, meanwhile the two vulnerable groups of farmers are farmland owners and peasants which should be taken into account by city government. Possibility of new strategies to address the problem of vulnerable groups of farmers is based on the investigation of their needs and each group characteristics. The strategy on preservation of agricultural land is mainly for farmland owners, while enhancement of improving agricultural productivity and farmer’s quality of life is the strategy proposed for the peasants. As a result, it is important for city management to require efforts and effectiveness on management to achieve sustainable agricultural management and improve farmer’ quality of life. Furthermore, the process and results of economic assessment could be applied in cities that have similar background on agricultural land.
