Abstract | Xedone River Basin is a branch of Mekong River which is located in the southern part of Lao PDR. In this area, there are many irrigation schemes both in the Xedone River and their tributaries as well as the population and investments in this area are continually increasing. Water resources are the main factors that influence national and local economic. However, water demands during dry season in this area are not enough water to provide the irrigation area especially water shortage during January to April. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess a water resources availability and rice water requirement in the basin. By applying SWAT model to access the hydrologic balance supported irrigation system planning and management; the Xedone river basin was divided into 17sub-basinsin order to check the water balance in tributaries. Two stations were applied to calibrate on daily time scale, the Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) showed satisfied and acceptable result with reference value of 0.76 at the Khongxedone and 0.72 at the Souvannakhili station. Then CROWAT model was applied to evaluate the water requirement irrigation. The assessment showed that there was shortage of water during dry season from January to April. Upstream of the Xedone Basin such as sub-basin 1,2,3,4,5 and 7 have water shortage in 3 sub-basin river i.e. sub2,4 and 3, in sub3 has river flow on March with efficiency 60% is 0.25 m3/s but irrigation water requirement is 2.75 m3/s, sub4 has river flow on March with efficiency 60% is 1.15 m3/s but irrigation water requirement is 2.55 m3/s and sub3 has river flow on March with efficiency 60% is 4.70 m3/s but irrigation water requirement is 5.66 m3/s. For the middle part of the Xedone basin such sub8 and 10, the irrigation water requirement is sufficient for water demand supply and the southern part of Xedone basin such sub12 and 17 shown that has water shortage in Sub17 that river flow on March with efficiency 60% is 11.20 m3/s but irrigation water requirement is 12.32 m3/s. |
