AbstractControlling of freshwater inflows and salinity level in estuaries is a challenging task due to the complex interaction between river flow and tidal current as well as the influence of water extraction from river upstream and along the estuary for multiple use s. This study aims to assist the management of freshwater inflows and salinity distribution in the lower Cimanuk River Basin, Indonesia. Hydrological, meteorological and statistical data were used to compute water availability and water demand. Additionally, two modern tools, the Water Evaluation and Planning System (WEAP) and analytical salinity intrusion model , have been applied in combination to evaluate water demand and supply taking into account of changes in river flow and salinity intrusion. The model s were calibrated using the stream flow, salinity samples and the water requirement for irrigation, fishery, domestic , and industries. F our scenarios of water use have been developed, including baseline condition , water use priority, effect of reservoir with or without hydropower production. It is showed that t he upstream freshwater discharge is a key factor to maintain salinity intrusion from the sea. Reservoir operation can reduce the salt intrusion length, which is about 10 km either under the case of hydropower operation or under no hydropower operation . The study results clearly demonstrate applicabilities of the developed tools in managing the freshwater and controlling salinity intrusion in an estuary .
