AbstractThe research was done to develop a simplified alternative dam - gate operation rule for the Sao river reservoir in Nghe An province in Vietnam. Nghe An province is very susceptible to the natural disaster s like floods and storms. Sao river reservoir is one of the few reservoirs in Vietnam which is used for providing water for irrigation purpose s a s well as for flood control for the downstream area . Du e to unavailability of complete data, a flood with return period of 500 years , which is available, was used f or the simulation of the reservoir operation . Three different conditions were analyzed for the reservoir simulations which are based on water level which are likely to occur during the flood. The three operation stage s used for the reservoir operation are (i) pre - flood regulation, (ii) flood regulation , and , (iii) emergency operation. The discharge formula was decided based on the Imamura method. T he result from the simulation showed that the outflow discharge was minimum for the 2nd case and maximum for the 3rd case. The reservoir level was maintained at normal water level for the 2nd case whereas for the 1st and 3rd cases , the final water level was higher than the normal water level. Therefore, in the case of Sao river reservoir, the Imamura method can safely discharge the flood with higher return period without causing flooding in the downstream and at the same time help i n maintaining the desirable water level in the reservoir. This method is easier to implement for the reservoir operator as they can decide the opening of spillway gates based only on the water level in the reservoir.
