AbstractNowadays , urbanization is a significant cause of population growth in many cities. Increasing population growth impacts negatively to urban environment such as lack of clean water supply, poor sanitation, noise pollution, and inadequate solid waste management. In the study area Kbang town, Gia Lai province, Viet Nam, inadequate solid waste management system is a big problem. The informal waste recycling sector is one of many stakeholders in solid waste management system, but this sector is not interested in by other stakeholders and it do not access exactly about informal waste recycling sector’s role in solid waste management system. By the mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, this study analyzes characteristic of solid waste in Kbang town, the role of informal waste recycling sector with community, and their environmental working conditions. However, the result of research just mention to economic aspects and working condition aspect and this study deals with some limitation like difficult access with informal sector, limit study time. Main physical characteristics of solid waste in Kbang town area are difference about quantity of solid waste in different areas, Difference about quantity of solid waste among days in a week, Difference about quantity of solid waste among months in a year increasing quantity of solid waste in Kbang town and the larger of organic waste composition than non - organic waste. The informal sectors contribute to reduce a mass of solid waste, to save cost of collection, transportation and disposal, to enhance income of informal sectors. Main compositions collected by informal sector are iron, plastic, paper and aluminum. The most important player in recycling system is itinerant waste buyer and waste street picking. Each stakeholder in informal waste recycling sector has different working conditions and Level of polluted environment that impact to each stakeholder is also different depend on where stakeholder work and how each s takeholder work. Base on this analysis, some recommendations about integrating informal waste recycling sectors into formal solid waste management system, policies and investing infrastructure to enhance work effectiveness of informal sector and to exploit the full potential recycling are suggested. In addition, some recommendations to overcome limitations of the research is mentioned such as, the second interview, cooperation with local authority and dealers to get information about other informal waste re cycling sectors.
