Coconut residues to energy and value-added materials in Andhra Pradesh, India

AbstractAndhra Pradesh, one of the newly formed states in India,is rich in coconut resources and stands 4th in the country in coconut crop productivity. The coconut residues are good sources of biomass energy available which have the potential to provide green energy, a better environment and financial prosperity to the state. As these coconut residues are generated in huge quantities in the two districts East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, this research study presents the financial and environmental benefits which could be possible on proper utilization of these residues through best conversion pathways for the coconut residues to energy as well as to value-added materials.The surplus residue availability estimated for the coconut residues in the two districts of Andhra Pradesh is found to be as 386.28 kT/year for the coconut husk and fronds and around 170kT/year for coconut shells. The cumulative energy potential of these coconut husk, fronds and shells calculated is found to be around 9.3PJ/year. The financial feasibility analysis is done for three different power capacities 2.5 MW, 5MW and 10 MW at 18$/ton, 24$/ton, and 30$/ton fuel rates which under specified considerations requires fuel about 37,629 tons, 74,754 tons and 146,145 tons per year which are equivalent to 9.7 %, 19.3 % and 37.8% of the surplus coconut husk and frondsavailable in the districts.The financial feasibility results indicate at the 3 fuel rates and at all the 3 considered capacities would have positive Net Present Value and pay back periods less than 2 years at 90 % plant availability. The estimated break-even availability percentages for the 2.5 MW, 5 MW and 10 MW plants are 44.49 % (3898 h), 41.99 % (3678 h) and 38.113 % (3339 h) in year. The analysis done for the value-added material technology activated carbon production through coconut shells results indicated that the projects have a positive Net Present value at specified considerations, would get a payback within 3 years and will have Benefit-Cost ratio of 3-4 at 100% capacity utilization. The break-even capacity utilization is estimated as 37.8 %.
