Series Statement
AbstractDue to rapid urbanization, the construction activities are increasing in Asian countries and so the C&D waste. C&D waste has serious, long standing and wide range of impacts on the environment. This study focuses on better management of C&D waste in Thailand. First step of C&D waste management is to estimate the C&D waste generated in the region. In this study the C&D waste generated in Thailand was estimated using the area based generation rate calculations. It is estimated that Thailand generated an average C&D waste of 11.51 mt in between 2010 and 2014. C&D waste generated from each province of Thailand was calculated in this study and it was found that Bangkok and around Bangkok regions generate more than 40% of Thailand’s C&D waste. It was found that the composition of C&D waste varies from country to country depending on the technology and availability of raw material. In Thailand the major three types of waste which could be recycled are concrete, brick and gypsum. Concrete is 78% of C&D waste generated in Thailand and in 2014, 9.04 mt of concrete waste was generated. Thailand is hugely dependent on quarrying the raw material for construction purposes. Thailand has tremendous C&D waste recycling potential which can reduce the quarrying activities in country, save landfill space and also create employment in recycling sector. At present Thailand has only one concrete recycling plant in entire country. This plant was compared with recycling plants in India and Japan and found out that Thailand needs strong C&D waste management policies to improve recycling. The construction and demolition waste is a grave concern in many economies around the world and countries like Hong Kong and Japan understand the negative impacts of C&D waste on the environment. In these countries the C&D waste is often heavily regulated. This study also gives details o f the C&D waste management in Hong Kong, Japan and India. Timescale of Policies, laws, regulations and guidelines of these countries were developed in this study. It is found that Hong Kong have more polices than japan, Thailand and India to tackle C&D waste. Thailand should implement proper rules and regulations on C&D waste management in order to provide safe environment to the future generations.
