Series Statement
AbstractThe purpose of this research is to study field behavior of excavation with diaphragm wall including lateral movement and ground settlement using a case study at Golden Palace project in Hanoi. T he data of lateral wall movement s observed from inclinometer were summarized and assessed. Subsequently, numerical analysis using finite element method (FEM) was conducted to simulate soil behavior as well as soil – wall interaction . The Mohr – Coulomb soil model (perfect - plasticity) with five parameters was employed for the analysis . Both direct analysis and back - analysis of soil parameters were performed by using PLAXIS Version 8.5 . Inclinometer data show that t he ratio of actual maximum lateral wall movement to excavation depth (  Hm /H) ranges 0.1 – 0.4% . With clayed soil s , the un - drained modulus (E u ) of the top and second layer s can be determined from the empirical relationship with un - drained shear strength ( C u ) by for mula: E u =300  C u and E u =1,0 00  C u , respectively. In addition, the drained modulus value (E’) of two top and two bottom sand layers equal to : E’=1,2 00  N (kPa) and E’=15,000  N (kPa) – with N is SPT - value – respectively would give reasonable prediction in comparison to observation data.
