Abstract | Hydropower is Nepal's most precious natural resource. The power generation capacity of Nepal's water is at 43000 MW but 99% remain untapped. Power generation has been under the domain of the government for decades but recent reforms have allowed some development and high interest from the both domestic and international private sector. This research aims at providing an overview of the Government of Nepal's (GON) practices and initiative in facilitating private sector participation in the HEP sector and analyzing the role of private sector participation in the HEP sector. The study summarizes global best practices and platform needed for private sector participation in the capital intensive industry. Then the study describes and analyzes the level of development of the sector and reform of national policies regarding private sector participation in the hydropower sector and explain the major improvement are required to improve the sector by allowing private sector participation. Thirdly the research focuses on the development of independent power producers; the acts, the processes, the institutional environment comprised of the financing, legal and political structures, the private companies and the problems the industry segment in facing. Finally the study suggests some more recommendations aiming at improving in the development of the sector in particular for the private sector investments in Nepal. The research is conducted with an aim for future developers to understand the industry scenario and problems that they are likely to face given the current socio, economic and political scenario in Nepal |
