AbstractThis aim of this study is to examine living conditions of migrant in peri-urban area andimpacts of theho khausystem or household registration on female and male migrants both in the migration process and upon settlements in peri-urban area. Theho khausystem wasimported from China’s household registration. Vietnam government adopted and implemented this system in 1955. The ho khausystem considers as mechanic to identify the citizen’s place of a person. This research also focuses on how they cope with obstacles due to their temporary residents in urban areas. The data was collected through participant observation, secondary data, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, key informants interviews and secondary data.The findings show that rural- urban migrants face challenges in peri-urban area such as limited water, poor facilities and services, lack of social participation, housing and food and entertainment facilities. Poor living conditions increase burden for women due to gender roles. Female headed of household face with a more difficult in make a living because they have to manage their lives on their own.The ho khausystem causes discriminations in urban labor market. Both female and male migrants cannot obtain in state sectors. As a result, they have to suffer from hard laboringworks. There is gender segregation in term of employment. In addition, many poor migrants do not enjoy the same benefits as residents. Migrant children access to education and health care services in the cities are difficult. The system has negative impacts on migrant female- headed households. Due to differences in socio-economic characteristics, and gender, migrants develop their own coping strategies differently.
