Abstract | Healthy river is the river that can maintain its characteristics when compare them with the reference period including ecosystem around the river, hydrological characteristics, water quality for supporting organisms and human demand of water, and maintain a well – being of aquatic organisms. In addition, healthy river should be received have less effects from various pressures and drivers. In addition, people in the river basin can provide efficient coping of both economic and social capacity to support river conservation activities. Therefore, to assess complexity of healthy river characteristics by single aspect assessment is not satisfied. This study attempts to develop a generic river health assessment framework which is an integrated assessment that can be applied for assessing river health status based on the concept of healthy river. A generic river health assessment framework comprises with four dimension including biological dimension, physical habitat dimension, water quality dimension and socio – economic dimension, and nine indicators that are identified by DPSIR framework, and potential river health assessment variables under each river health assessment indicators are enlisted then Songkhram River Basin (SRB) is selected to be the case study. Therefore, a river health assessment framework for assessing river health status of SRB are developed based on a generic river health assessment framework and eighteen river health assessment variables are identified by SMART criteria and data availability. An application of a river health assessment framework for Songkhram river basin provides the results that Songkhram river basin has a good river health status in every part of Songkhram river basin through year 2009 to 2014 except the middle part that presents an improvement of river health status from a good health to very good health, and biological dimension presents an increasing of health status that varies in spatial scale from a good health to an excellent health through year 2009 to 2014, water quality dimension presents an improvement of health status from a good health to a very good health except the lower part while physical habitat dimension presents a stable status of a very good health and socio – economic presents a stable status of a good health in every part of the basin through year 2009 to 2014. Moreover, a river health assessment framework for Songkhram river basin has been developed to be a river health assessment tool for Songkhram river basin in Microsoft excel program, and it provides nine worksheets that users can use to assess river health status of Songkhram river basin. |
