AbstractIrrigated agriculture is the spine of food and economy in Pakistan. More than 70% of fresh water resources are exploited in irrigation to produce food and industrial raw materials. Major source is the Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS), which provides more than 70% irrigation water in the country. The irrigation water supply from the IBIS is shrinking due to increase in industrial and domestic demand. Irrigation water demand is also rising by the increase in cropping intensity. Agricultural performance and water productivity are also found to be unsatisfactory by conventional low efficiency irrigation methods. To increase the water productivity and get more crop per drop a highly efficient drip irrigation method is introduced throughout the Punjab province. Punjab produces more than 80% of agricultural products in Pakistan. A study on the adoption of drip irrigation system (DIS) was conducted in Faisalabad and Nankana Sahib districts of Punjab during 2018. The main objective of the study was to find out the determinants factor of drip adoption, benefits and challenges faced in application by the farmers. A multistage random sampling was applied to collect the data from 120 respondents after determining the sample size by Yamane formula. To fulfill the objectives of the study, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from adopters and non-adopters of DIS by personal interviews. Data were analyzed by descriptive, qualitative and quantitative analyses using percentage, t- test, Chi-square test, binary logit regression model and Garrett’s Ranking Technique. The goodness-of-fit test was employed to validate the model. The binary logit model predicted a strong relationship between the dependent and independent explanatory variables with coefficients of determinants (R2) of 94%. Among all the explanatory variables, farmer education, landholding, drip training, distance of water source, water quality showed positive and land holding showed negative influence on the adoption of DIS. The results of Garrett’s Ranking Technique revealed that water saving, increase in crop yield, fertilizer saving and improvement in produce quality were the highly beneficial aspect of DIS adoption. The farmers also indicated that water saving, and fertilizer saving were the most beneficial aspect of drip irrigation system adoption in Faisalabad and Nankana Sahib districts respectively. The constraints identification and analysis indicated that farmers who adopted drip irrigation were facing several challenges during application. Major challenges faced in the use of DIS by the farmers were lack of agronomic services, lack of after sale services, lack of technical assistance, unavailability of trained mechanics and high cost of spare parts. The Garrett’s Ranking of Challenge indicated that the severe challenge was the lack of after sale service and lack of agronomic services in Faisalabad and Nankana Sahib, respectively. Based on these findings it is suggested that the awareness training about needs and benefits should be helpful to the farmers facing water scarcity for the promotion of the drip irrigation system. Furthermore the technical backup with after sale services and agronomic service by services supplies companies and extension workers would be important for the efficient and sustainable application of drip irrigation system.
