AbstractIn Mobile Ad-Hoc Network(MANET) the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) pro- tocol is a popular and widely used proactive routing protocol. Furthermore, OLSR is not aware of Quality of Service (QoS).Therefore, many research works are proposed to improve the Quality of Service using di erent types of metrics, namely hop count, delay, etc. In recent times, to improve the performances of wireless network, especially the mobile ad hoc network a new approach called cross-layer design has been proposed . In this work, we propose an approach based on cross-layer design scheme to enhance performance of OLSR by using Bit Error Rate (BER) derived from physical layer to- gether with a network layer parameter called Connectivity Index (CI). The proposed heuristic approach is to selects the best path based on highest weighted CI and lowest BER to improve the performance of Multi-Point Relays (MPR) selection algorithm and route computation. To verify this work, two types of tra c are considered: CBR and MPEG-4(VBR). The performances of the proposed scheme are investigated by simu- lation using Throughput,Average Total Energy Consumption,Packet Delivery Ratio, Average End-to-End Delay and Control Overhead as Performance evaluation metrics. As stated in the simulation results, it is obvious that our proposed scheme provides some improvement of the afore-mentioned evaluation metrics over the original OLSR algorithm. Therefore, our proposed method is able to support energy e cient routing in highly dynamic mobility and density environments when ows CBR and multimedia tra c such as MPEG-4. iii
