AbstractAviation is an important section of the economy. Although the profit given by this section is still modest but with the passenger, cargo and baggage carrier by high speed, short time, convenient mode, many supporting services and using much of employees…aviation always has a positive supported role for the economic, politic and social development of each country. In addition, aviation is also one of the leaders in approaching, applying the success of advanced technologies. By this reason, Vietnam Airlines Corporation (VAC), a Stated-owned company, is now keeping the important position in the development of Vietnam’s economy. During the past ten years (2002-2011), although facing of many major events such as SARS pandemic in 2003, the poultry flu pandemic in 2004-2005, the economic crisis in 2008-2009, VAC had the right direction, passed flexibly the difficulties and developed very fast in both of width and depth to become a regional medium dimension Airlines having effective activities and actively involving in the general trend of integration with accepted image and service quality. The fleet of VAC includes now about more than 70 modern aircrafts with different types, the flight network includes 21 points with 38 domestic routes and 27 points with 47 international routes to 16 countries. The sale system developed to 43 countries. VAC has now a confidential and high skill pilot and engineer team that helps VAC to be initiative in its operation and aircraft maintenance. VAC has the corporation with more than 80 other airlines in the world and become a member of Sky Team in June 2010. At present, some other Airlines in the Asia region (Qatar Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airway, Singapore Airlines…) are still significant players. In 2012, this is the second time Qatar Airways with 108 aircrafts became the best one of the world and also one of three airlines in the Middle East reported in the top ten countries list of the world. Asiana Airline with 75 aircrafts is one of six airlines in East Asia and South East Asia reported in the top ten countries list of the world and is trying to get back the first position that it got in 2010. Singapore Airlines with 105 aircrafts becomes the third player in the world and Cathay Pacific Airway with 138 aircrafts becomes the fourth player in the world. In Vietnam, many low cost Airlines have been established, that contributes to the stronger competition in the air transport market. The goal of VAC is to become the second player in South East Asia in the near future. VAC has to face to many challenges caused by the strong competition of other airlines in the Asia region and also to the low-cost Airlines in Vietnam (Tiger Airways, Thai AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Lion Air). Based on the examination and analysis of the external and internal environment, this study will formulate a development strategy for VAC in all aspects as market share, flight network, fleet, human resources, trade name, sale capacity, services, capital, operation control and security policy…This strategy would helps VAC to develop accordingly to the growth of business environment, aviation market and catch the opportunity in the future.
