AbstractReduce, Reuse and Recycle’ should not be just a slogan but becomes a way of life for all people, and people must act fast, in order to address one of the most pressing issue of our time. Waste management has been implemented in Cathay City, the headquarter building of Cathay Pacific Airways since 1998 when staff first moved into the premise. Up to now, the number of items that are being segregated and sent for recycling include plastics, aluminum cans, paper and cardboard, fluorescent tubes, laser cartridges, VCDs, rechargeable batteries, glass bottles and food waste. From the development of the waste inventory list in 2004 it is found that over half of the waste generated can be recycled and continuously look into opportunity for further recycling. The donation of surplus food to Food Angel started in August 2013, a food rescue programme in Hong Kong. Food Angel collects the surplus meat and vegetables from our food court in Cathay City which are then re-cooked and distributed to the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific Airways has extended waste management programme to aircraft and performed onboard recyclable waste separation and recycling for all inbound flights to Hong Kong for a number of years and the items that are separated for recycling include plastic bottles, aluminums cans, magazines and newspaper. The collection has been extended further to plastic cups used in Economy class in 2008 and wine bottles in 2011. With the maturity of the onboard waste separation for all inbound flights, Cathay Pacific Airways wishes to explore the feasibility of carrying out inflight waste sorting and recycling in outports for outbound flights. This report provides an introduction of Cathay Pacific Airways inflight waste management initiatives with detail of the waste management strategy. Literature reviews on waste management in aviation sector and a summary research on cabin waste management best practices implemented by other airlines. The methodology used by Cathay Pacific Airways in achieving the aim of the waste management strategy and a summary of the stakeholder engagement. Detail on the feasibility research carried out and business strategy suggestion in improving Cathay Pacific Airways onboard waste management are also included in this report.
