AbstractMotivation continues to be a well-researched topic both by academics and commercial firms. The aim of motivation in the workplace is to ensure satisfied employees as well as having managers with the responsibility to motivate others. The purpose of this study is to study motivation factors of staff working in the EDL head office Vientiane Capital in Laos. The study is based on Herzberg’s two factors theory: Hygiene and Motivation factors, and on the importance level of these motivation factors in parallel with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The study used a quantitative design with a theoretical framework based on Herzberg’s Motivation and Hygiene theory. The dependent was satisfaction and the variables were motivation and hygiene factors. The data was collected from 199 staff working for the EDL Head Office in six different departments. The data was analyzed using SPSS and Excel. The findings showed that EDL employees are more motivated by motivation factors rather than hygiene which dominated in the past. Neither can be overlooked by managers when motivating their employees as both correlated almost equally with job importance, meaning both are important for the employees in their jobs and their professional lives.
