AbstractThe purposes of this study are to identify the existing technology based banking products and services in Bangladesh, finding scope of adopting new products comparing with existing products and services in major banks in Canada and finding challenges, requirements and cost benefit issues of technology adoption in banks in Bangladesh. For achieving the purposes, the study conducts a questionnaire survey on 47 commercial banks in Bangladesh and visits website of major ten banks in Canada. The survey collects data/information on existing technology based banking products and services, challenges, requirements and cost benefit issues of technology adoption in banks in Bangladesh. Data on existing technology based banking products and services in Canada are collected through visiting websites of major 10 banks in Canada. The study identifies a package of 23 technology based banking products and services available in Bangladesh, almost homogeneous to the same in Canada. Important findings on cost benefit issues are that technology adoption in Bangladesh were profitable within a maximum of 5 years of adoption and this reduced bank’s operating cost. This study finds 6 key challenges and 5 key requirements of progressing technology based banking in Bangladesh. The findings of the study will be useful to banks in Bangladesh in reshaping their policies as this study provides industry status on some selected issues of technology based banking. This will also benefit the clients, regulator and the stakeholders of banks. This study fills the gaps for requiring more studies finding new scope of adopting banking technology in Bangladesh comparing with a developed country like Canada.
