Abstract | The handling of a natural or man-made disaster is a challenging task for emergency management teams, as it requires an efficient communication and coordination among first responders for successful emergency management operations. During emergency situations, the deployed ad hoc communication network may experience congestion, fault or malicious behavior, which may result into significant loss of emergency related information. A theoritical framework for a query based trust evaluation scheme has been proposed, which keeps track of faulty, selfish and malicious nodes dynamically in a disaster communication network. This information may be used by the routing protocols to find trustworthy routes, which may deliver the information to intended recepients with high probability. A trust aware reliable routing scheme for emergency response communication net- works has also been proposed, which finds the shortest possible routes comprising of only reliable nodes. The reliability of a node is measured in terms of its packet forward- ing behavior and participation behavior during the route setup process. The proposed scheme also reroutes packets through other reliable route if some node performs packet forwarding misbehavior in an active route. The nodes observe packet forwarding behav- ior of neighbor nodes multiple times until they obtain sufficient evidence for predicting their future behavior. The proposed scheme classifies nodes as reliable, faulty and ma- licious. The performance of the proposed trust aware reliable routing scheme has been evaluated against a malicious behavior detection scheme in terms of packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and normalized routing overhead through extensive simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed trust aware reliable routing scheme performs better against a malicious behavior detection scheme in terms of packet de- livery ratio and normalized routing overhead with a significant increase in end-to-end delay, if the network contains some random congestion, faulty nodes and malicious nodes. The performance of the proposed trust aware reliable routing scheme improves significantly in terms of the said parameters, if the value of packet forwarding threshold decreases. |
