Abstract | This study evaluated the performance of scheduled bank’s agricultural/rural credit programs, appraised the relationship between agricultural credit and agricultural production in Bangladesh perspective. The study used data collected mostly from Bangladesh Bank and some other data sources. It is found that the performance of agricultural/rural credit of scheduled banks improved over the period (FY 2008-09 to 2012-13) due to effective policy shift by BB in recent years. Bangladesh Bank’s policy on agricultural/rural credit has promoted the access to credit for small and marginal farmers and participation of all scheduled banks has expanded credit access in agricultural sector. Their performance seemed satisfactory in terms of credit disbursement and recovery. Their outstanding credit and overdue credit was found in downtrend during the period which indicated the positive growth of their performances as a whole. In the last several years, the growth in the agricultural production, specifically crop, fisheries and livestock sectors was observed steady as well as upward sloping. The Correlation between credit disbursement and agricultural production was found positive and significant in the context of Bangladesh. The findings will help policy makers and practitioners to gain better understanding about importance of agricultural/rural financing and lead to better credit policies and programs. |
