AbstractToday, most manufacturing companies have to operate their business in high competitive environment. They have to hold inventory at certain level to meet changeable demand from customer and to exploit economic of scale in production. However, maintenance of high inventory will require a high level of working capital. This will increase production cost and reduce competitive advantage. In order to increase competitive advantage in the market, companies have been focusing on production expenditure management. In which, management of inventory plays a very important role in supply chain management system. This research studied factors that have impacts on inventory holding level of BlueScope Steel Vietnam, and illustrates the relation of these factors with inventory management. It also describes solutions done to improve inventory management and potential risk from these solutions. However, the research does not focus on complicated mathematic analysis of safety stock, reorder point but it concentrates on general actions such as sourcing and planning. This can help readers approach the research to get the idea easily. Moreover, solutions in the research are proven successful in improving inventory status in BlueScope Steel Vietnam in the last year and they can be considered to apply for other companies in the same industry. Finally, the study recommends suggestions that the company can carry out in coming time for further improvement of inventory. Basically, a good inventory management mechanism will be helpful to sustain the profitable growth and competitive
