Abstract | Thailand has an over a half century history of milk production. After technical cooperation with Denmark, Thailand has embarked with strategic production of milk and promoting dairy industry. Milk consumption was not a common in Thai society because of the traditional habitual of eating. Over the year, Thai people have increased the milk consumption by 10 times since 1960. Due to increase in per capita income and exposure to westernized food, Thai people having more preference to dairy products. This has been seen through their improved health conditions. Thailand has become 80 per cent self reliance on their home milk production. This is because a tremendous efforts and policies implemented by The Royal Thai Government. The annual growth rate of milk production is 10 per cent and the milk consumption is 6 per cent. The milk consumption in Thailand is 24.8 kg per capita in 2007 as compared to average consumption in United States of America 253.8 kg per capita, France 260.8 kg per capita, Germany 247.24 kg per capita. The economic, cultural and demographic parameters plays vital role in shaping the consumption patterns in Thailand. In Thailand, the School Milk program has a successful impact on the consumption of milk. Due to trade reforms across the region the dairy industry has seen a significant growth. The trade in between ASEAN, Australia, New Zealand, European Union and USA has been a growth engine for Thailand. |
