Abstract | As you may know that the history of teaching foreign languages in Vietnam has a very close relationship with the politics. From 1975 until 1989, the main foreign language was Russian and now it is English. Especially during a period when the Vietnamese government promoted a freer market economy the English in Vietnam occurred strongly. However, the government has used the teaching materials and method developed by the applied linguists which was not appropriate for Vietnam conditions. After that, English curriculum in the schools focused on the reading skills, while at the higher education the English was required depending on the type and purpose of each institution offering the programme. The grammar translation method was used so even though the government has tried much in changing and improving the teaching programme of English. In 2006, Vietnam entered the WTO, again it shows that Vietnam wants to bring itself to the world. To prepare for this integration, Vietnam understands that we need to prepare the personnel who can work in the international environment. Thus, the policy makers have begun with reforming education. With the decision 1400/QĐ-TTg signed in 2008, Vietnam has adopted the CEFR as a benchmark for all learners and teachers of English. This decision makes Cambridge ESOL examinations and other testing organisations relevant and especially Cambridge ESOL needs to take full advantage of this opportunity to access into the market where is quite pure but potential and competitive a lot. Finding the opportunities and the challenges is very important to the management board of Cambridge ESOL in Vietnam. This case research is to help that problem solved by researching and analysing process combined with the survey and questionnaires. |
