Challenges for the sustainability of agent banking in Bangladesh

AbstractThe main purpose of the study was to find out challenges for the sustainability of agent banking in Bangladesh. The specific objectives of the study were to find out what extent security, liquidity, network connectivity and profitability affect on the sustainability of agent banking in Bangladesh. The research was conducted using descriptive research design. The research was focused on only the seven commercial banks which were actively operating agent banking operations in Bangladesh. And data was collected by using questionnaire both from the focal points (key personnel) of agent banking and appointed agents of these seven commercial banks. The findings of the study indicated that security and liquidity had not concerned for agent banking sustainability but network connectivity and low profit margin/ loss had greatly influenced on the sustainability of agent banking in Bangladesh. The regression analysis indicated that security had positive and the network connectivity had negative and statistically significant (p-value<0.05) relationship to sustainability of agent banking. The study has concluded that agent banking is a new dimension of providing banking services in the remote rural areas. It has greatly contributed to the financial inclusion by providing banking services to the closer of the unbanked people. The study has also concluded that banks should address the challenges which agents were facing for providing quality of services for making sustainable agent banking model. And the researcher finally recommends that every bank should take agent banking model for extending banking services in every corners of Bangladesh.
