Competitive strategy in Vietnam's it market : a case study of the information technology center of Vietnam electricity

AbstractOver the past ten years, the Government of Vietnam has indicated a clear determination to see Information Technology (IT) as a main driver of economic growth and social advancement. In the government’s vision, by 2010, the growth rate of the software industry and information content industry will be maintained at an average level of 40%/year to achieve a total turnover of some USD 1.2 billion. The computer hardware industry should grow at an average rate of 20%/year and earn a total turnover of some USD 3 billion. By that time, Vietnam is also to become a leader in Southeast Asia in the application of information technology and in software and related services exports. This has been made Vietnam an attractive and reliable IT market for both local enterprises as well as foreign investors. As a member of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) - a state-owned corporation, the Information Technology Centre (EVN.IT) has contributed to make EVN being the State-owned Corporation who has developed and applied IT to the production, business management and operation activities in the most vigorous and efficient manner. Under the pressure of joining WTO and growing the economy, EVN has to improve its capability through promoting IT applications to create competitive advantages as well profiting in the IT market to diversify its business activities. Therefore, EVN.IT has to continue to complete and update EVN’s information systems and develop information technology products to supply the market. In the context of the fierce competitive situation in Vietnam’s IT market, EVN.IT must choose and implement an appropriate competitive strategy in order to penetrate successfully this market. The research presents an overview of the IT market in Viet Nam and provides a detailed analysis of the market opportunities and threats. The research also addresses in detail the weaknesses and strengths of EVN.IT; identifies demand and competitive situation for IT activities in EVN - the main market of EVN.IT and presents some recommendations as well as proposes an action plan for successfully its competitive strategy in the future.
