Abstract | The digital society is facing an unprecedented volume growth rate. This increase of data flow calls for new techniques for data analysis to outmatch simple statistical techniques, to perform a smart understanding and presentation of what is called nowadays Big Data. Sorting through this large amount of data, giving an output of relevant and humanly understandable information is the main objective of Data Mining. The aim of Data Mining is to simplify and reduce the size or the complexity so that it becomes understandable and usable. This research focuses on two main concepts of Data Mining: Clustering and Prediction. After a performance comparison with MATLAB of two clustering algorithms: K-Means clustering algorithm and Fuzzy C-Means algorithm, we will apply those concepts to the study of the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) earthquakes catalog, a dataset of worldwide earthquakes events between 1900 and 2008. Through this study we will underline the depth dependence of earthquakes frequency-magnitude distribution, following the Gutenberg and Richter relationship. |
