AbstractWage earners of Bangladesh often use informal channels to remit money to home country. This paper tries to find out some important reasons behind using such informal channels. Remittance behavior of wage earners of Bangladesh living in Thailand was studied carefully. Primary data was collected from a survey done among Bangladeshi expatriate living in Thailand. Expert opinion was also sought regarding this issue. The sample respondents rank the factors those are mentioned in the questionnaire according their own views. Analysis shows that majority of the samples think exchange rate, urgency of remittance and transaction time of the remittance service provider are the most important factors behind using informal channels to remit money. On the other hand illiteracy, illegal worker, anonymity etc. are not considered as that much important. Results are shown in graphs as well as in a tabular form. Factors that are considered most important are linked with the structural bottleneck of the formal channels. Establishing as well as promoting cheap, convenient, and reliable ways of transferring remittances can ensure greater propensity of remittance through formal channel. At the same time government should take necessary steps to remove the black market premium on exchange rates
