AbstractIn the soft ground improvement, settlement and degree of consolidation calculation in the field is very important, it is bases for design quality assessment. For this purpose, monitoring instruments are installed to record settlement and the pore water pressure dissipation data such as: settlement plate, extensometer and piezometer. Based on recorded data, degree of consolidation and coefficient of consolidation are estimated for the soft clay that is treated by preloading surcharge with PVD, the Asaoka’s method is used for data analysis of settlement plates and extensometers. The horizontal consolidation coefficient obtained from monitoring data analysis (which is denoted ch) then compare with the vertical consolidation coefficient (cv) at normal-consolidated state (NC) obtained from consolidation test in the laboratory. For the study site, the ch value is about 3.6 m2/yr with PVD of 1.5m triangle pattern spacing and kh/ks = 2, the ch value is about 3.1 times as much as cv (NC) value. Furthermore, the ch value is also estimated by piezocone dissipation test [which is denoted ch (CPTu)] in the field. The test was done together with the soil investigation work. This value then compare with the vertical consolidation coefficient (cv) at over-consolidated state (OC) obtained from consolidation test. For this site, the ch (CPTu) is estimated about 21 m2/yr and about 5.5 times as much as cv (OC) value.
