Diffusion of precast/prestressed concrete in the construction industry : a preliminary finding in Vietnam

AbstractPrecast/prestressed concrete has been developed few decades in the world as a new technology to speed up construction project completion as well as maintain durability, high performance and cost saving, to become alternative option for building construction works in severe climate conditions with ice and heat, improving resistance capability to salt and security-tension project requirements. The technology of casting precast/prestressed concrete at workshops with strict management and perfect design on materials enables to optimize capability of precast and prestressed concrete in order to bring benefits back to residents, constructors and project investors. The vital character of precast/prestressed concrete is taking advantage of less required steel volume in concrete making process. Of which, this method uses high prestressed steel instead of reinforced steel that make the prestressed concrete lighter and save cost up to 17-20 percent in comparison with traditional concrete due to less steel volume requirement. The precasting process also reduces cost up to 7-13 percent in comparison with cost requirement in place concrete casting process. The total cost saving of prestressed concrete can make is around 30 percent in comparison with traditional concrete casting process. This technology has just appeared in Vietnam for more than ten years and the Vietnam Construction and Import-Export corporation (Vinaconex) played the pioneer role to import the production chain, updating with new technology for churning out a number of precast/prestressed concrete products such as beams, slabs and truss through its affiliate Vinaconex Xuan Mai joint stock company. Due to cost saving advantages, the technology has still maintained its initial target to cater for building houses for low-income people. Vinaconex Xuan Mai joint stock company has expanded copes of applications of this technology to build commercial works such as commercial apartments, commercial halls, urban zones and so on. The market for this type of product can be expanded to other sector such as infrastructure construction like bridge, flyovers on road, pavements and road such as road in remote areas with unstable ground on mountainous areas and areas near by the sea. This paper presents market potential of precast/prestressed concrete products in Vietnam for the past ten years nad the coming time once urbanization process will spread and infrastructure construction needs upgrading and new works. The paper also describes the trends and demands in Vietnam in general and experiences and production process of precast/prestressed concrete at Vinaconex Xuan Mai joint stock company in particular. The thesis also shows a full picture of precast/prestressed concrete products for further consideration this market segment expansion in Vietnam with suggestions.
