AbstractSince WDM networks provide an enormous transmission bandwidth when compared to typical user requirements, traffic grooming is applied to increase the efficiency of bandwidth utilization by aggregating subwavelength traffic demands into common wavelength channels. Most existing researches consider traffic grooming in a centralized environment, while a few researches consider traffic grooming in a distributed environment. However, no consideration is given so far regarding the use of alternate routing with distributed traffic grooming. This thesis proposes a distributed traffic grooming algorithm that can support fixed alternated routing. The algorithm consists of route discovery algorithm, wavelength reservation and assignment algorithm, and multi-hop traffic grooming algorithm. Through Python simulation, the proposed algorithm is demonstrated to provide better blocking probability performance than distributed traffic grooming with fixed routing. In addition, it is observed that multi-hop traffic grooming does not provide significant benefits over single-hop traffic grooming and hence can be removed from the algorithm steps to simplify the associated algorithm complexity.
