Abstract | The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of chitosan and lipid coating on the mechanical properties and barrier properties. In this experiment stearic acid and palmitic acid (0.5%, 1% and 2%) were blended with chitosan to improve the hydrophilic nature of chitosan. To overcome the brittleness of the biopolymer, glycerol was used as a plasticizing agent. The results revealed that chitosan coated paper had significant changes in the mechanical properties as compared to uncoated kraft paper. Although the tear strength of the chitosan coated paper decreased, tensile strength, %elongation and bending resistance were improved. For the incorporation of stearic and palmic acid into the chitosan solution, the tensile strength increased while tear strength and bending resistance decreased. Chitosan coated paper did not improve the water barrier property. However, the blended chitosan with stearic acid and palmic acid can reduce water absoption of chitosan coated paper. The grease resistance property was obtained by chitosan and blended chitosan with stearic and palmitic acid coated paper. |
