Abstract | In this research the use of bentonite as an ink absorbent in the waste paper deinking process is investigated. Bentonite was applied to old newspapers (ONP) and old corrugated Containerboard (OCC) in deinking process and its effectiveness was evaluated. The results from adding bentonite on the ERIC values for ONP and OCC indicate that it may be beneficial to use an addition of bentonite in the repulping stage due to its ability to minimize ink and stickies by dispersing the pigment particles and adsorb them. Higher surface area and the charge of bentonite can function as an ink absorber and sticky catcher. Also, The ISO brightness is raised up when adding bentonite because ink and contaminant are released from pulp which gives a positive effect on the effective residual ink concentration reduction. Thus, lower ERIC value means low amount of ink remaining on pulp which resulted in high brightness. The presence of ink influences the brightness and color of recycled pulp. However, the adding of bentonite in deinking process of ONP and treated OCC did not significantly affected (increased) the strength properties of paper since some fines were lost after the washing the strength properties of paper may decrease and not different from non adding bentonite due to a loss in bonding ability. |
