Abstract | This research analyzed carbon emissions of one of the megacities, Bangkok, its energy demand and potential solutions of both cutting carbon emissions and energy demand in passenger road transport. Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning (LEAP) system is used to estimate the trend of carbon emissions and energy demand of the megacity from 2012- 2050. Fuel switching and energy efficiency scenarios have been used to analyze solutions for cutting carbon emissions and energy consumption in Bangkok compared with the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. The results demonstrate that alternate policy scenarios can reduce the carbon emissions and energy demand in different ways. The fuel switching options can significantly reduce the level of carbon emissions, whereas the energy efficiency options are more effective for reduction of both of energy demand and carbon emissions. This study proves that there is a close linkage between carbon emission and final energy consumption in a city. Bangkok can reduce 45 million tons of carbon dioxide through implementing the energy policies provided in this study; by cutting carbon emissions, Bangkok can have a positive impact on climate change mitigation and can work towards sustainable development. The solutions provided in this study can also save 2,537 ktoe of energy consumption from Bangkok by 2050 |
