Abstract | Croplands can play a role in climate change mitigation by reducing CO2 emission and by storing CO2 in biomass and soil. Therefore, it is important to estimate carbon stock. In Bangladesh, more than 60% land is used for agriculture. This study intends to estimate carbon stock of present land uses, assess agricultural practices of carbon management and project soil carbon under RCP scenarios 4.5 and 8.5 in Dhaleshwari watershed. In the study area, the total biomass carbon, soil organic carbon and carbon stock were 37.78 tons/ha, 137.46 tons/ha and 175.24 tons/ha respectively. All of the farmers use inorganic fertilizer and practice tillage and irrigation. Under RCP scenario 4.5, boro paddy (35 tons/ha) will have highest rate of SOC and sweet potato (20 tons/ha) will have the lowest amount of SOC. Under RCP scenario, 8.5 boro paddy (34 tons/ha) will gain the highest amount of SOC and wheat (22 tons/ha) will have lowest amount of SOC. Under RCP scenario 4.5, carbon stock will increase by 7.2% in 2015-2050 and by 2.1% in 2051-2086 from present carbon stock. Under RCP scenario 8.5, carbon stock will increase by 8.4% in 2015-2050 and by 0.4% in 2051-2086. |
