AbstractSurface irrigation has been traditionally employed to irrigate the crops, but water losses have been found to be quite excessive. Therefore it is required to develop more efficient irrigation systems. Porous pipe (Leaky hose) is an irrigation technique, which can ensure water savings and supply water and fertilizers directly to the root zone of the plants. Additionally, application of porous pipe in irrigation is effective since it reduces evaporation, runoff and deep percolation. Also, it is regarded as an environment-friendly product because it helps to reduce environmental problems brought about by the disposal of waste rubber. Since porous pipe is an extruded membrane manufactured from recycled tires, there is little control over the size and distribution of pores. Consequently, there is currently little information available about the discharge uniformity and operating characteristics of porous pipe. In this study, porous pipes made up from recycled rubber were tested to evaluate its efficiency. In the experiments, 15 m long porous pipes were tested under different constant operating pressures. Relationships for discharge-pressure, discharge variation in pipe length, changing discharge with time, coefficients of variation, emission uniformity, and coefficient of uniformity were obtained. Data were analyzed based on ASAE Standards. The results showed that the operating pressure and time had significant effects on tested parameters and the existing porous pipe is acceptable for use in irrigation. After that porous pipe was installed in the field to evaluated and compare with furrow irrigation in terms of water use, yield, water use efficiency WUE, energy consumption, and cost. The overall performance of porous pipe showed less water use, higher yield and WUE, higher energy use and more capital cost. Therefore, it can be concluded from the study that porous pipe can be useful and effective for micro irrigation systems especially for row crops. Finally the main objective of this research was to evaluate and study the application of porous pipe, and bring this information to public knowledge for consumers and industry use.
